WHAT IS METAL FORGING?

Metal forging techniques include all types of metal parts, axles of trucks, cars, gears, engine valves, bolts, screws, mallet and axe heads.

The benefits of forging over other manufacturing techniques such as machining or metal casting lie in the internal chemistry of the metal material being used. As iron is heated, its molecules loosen their holding “force” and the metal becomes softer. This allows a blacksmith or forger to effectively change the shape of the metal by striking it. By doing so the grains of metal are compressed and the density of the material gets higher at the point of impact. This results in a much stronger metal, as the grains become continuous over the shape of the product.

Today, metal forging is most commonly done as a hot process, although there are many applications where parts are forged cold, usually small cold-formed parts.
